Henry Ford Hospital

Henry Ford Hospital

Nine Decades Of Healing: Henry Ford Hospital, a specialty care, teaching and research institution in Detroit's New Center area, has been serving the health care needs of metro Detroiters for over 90 years. Today, it is the flagship of Henry Ford Health System, which consists of a dozen owned or affiliated hospitals, 25 medical centers and a wide range of other health services. Founded by auto pioneer Henry Ford, the original 48-bed hospital was built on 20 acres of land on West Grand Boulevard and opened its doors in October 1915. Throughout its history, Henry Ford Hospital (HFH) has built upon its long-standing mission to provide exceptional health care, strengthened by excellence in education and research.

The Hospital Today: HFH is licensed for 903 beds and is a tertiary care hospital, a multi-organ transplantation center and a Level 1 trauma center. In-house medical staff from all trauma specialties are available 24 hours a day to treat complex injuries with the most advanced techniques. HFH is listed in "Best Hospitals in America," (Visible Ink Press), and in 2004 was ranked for its expert care in 9 specialties by U.S. News & World Report. In 2003, HFH had the lowest rate of medical mortality of any hospital in Michigan.

When Life Is on the Line: The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the country. More than 92,000 patients seek emergency care from HFH annually. The top five diagnostic reasons for visits include respiratory ailments, abdominal or gastrointestinal problems, trauma, cardiac and neurological conditions.

More than 38,000 patients received inpatient care at HFH each year. In addition to local referrals, physicians from around the country and the world refer patients to HFH for treatment and care.

Henry Ford Research Institute: Supported by internal and external funding exceeding $50 million, 150 medical specialists and research scientists, including 55 full-time researchers, are involved in more than 1,500 studies annually. Henry Ford ranks in the top 6 percent of all institutions in funding granted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Public Health Service. Subjects include stroke, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, sleep disorders, diabetes and lung diseases.

Henry Ford has academic affiliations with Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan State University School of Osteopathic Medicine, University of Michigan School of Medicine, Chicago Medical School, Medical College of Ohio and Oakland University's Biomedical Physics Program. More than 1,000 students benefit from 70 physician, nurse, allied health and continuing medical education programs. Some 850 physicians-in-training in 22 specialties and 39 subspecialties are enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs.

Committed to the Community: Since the doors swung open over nine decades ago, HFH's mission has been to make health care accessible to whomever needs it. In 2004, Henry Ford Health System provided $120 million in uncompensated care to the poor and uninsured. Additionally, HFH is involved with numerous community partnerships aimed at building a healthy and economically viable city and region.

West Bloomfield
Medical Center

When Henry Ford Health System established the West Bloomfield Medical Center in 1975, it was already planning the eventual addition of a full-service hospital on the site. Projections of sustained population growth, coupled with the absence of hospitals in western Oakland County, fueled the vision of an expanded campus on the System's 160-acre site on Maple Road.

The hospital, scheduled to open in March 2009, is a much-needed community resource, providing convenient care close to home for thousands of Oakland County families. Patients in West Bloomfield are currently traveling as much as 30 minutes for hospital care.

While it has taken 30 years to make the hospital a reality, the transition is expected to be smooth.A major reason is that the Medical Center has established a significant presence in the community, caring for as many patients as most community hospitals. Medical Center physicians see more than 100,000 patients each year, accounting for 225,000 visits. Nearly 28,000 patients are seen in the Emergency Room, and 6,000 surgeries are performed annually.

The Medical Center staff includes 120 doctors and nearly 500 support staff, and features more than 25 medical specialties. The campus also includes Maplegrove Center, a 50-bed chemical dependency treatment center for adults and adolescents.

Plans for the new hospital call for extensive use of cutting-edge technology. A solid foundation is already in place at the Medical Center in the form of advanced diagnostic services and treatments, including MRI, CT, PET and Lithotripsy.
