Internal Medicine: Ambulatory Clinic

The Henry Ford Hospital residency program has made a fundamental commitment to ambulatory training in order to best prepare our trainees for the future. Nearly one half of the residency program is focused on management of patients in the outpatient setting.

The ambulatory care clinic experience is an integral part of medical education during the three years of residency at Henry Ford Hospital. It is during clinic that residents will learn how to manage outpatient conditions and follow patients longitudinally over time. Residents also have the opportunity to develop close relationships with their senior staff preceptors/mentors in the clinic.

Residents will be assigned to a specific medical division, either at the main campus or in a satellite clinic. A Resident will remain with the same preceptor for the duration of the clinic experience. Other preceptors will cover at various times, but in general, the primary preceptor will guide the education.

The resident is a valuable member of the medical division. Under the supervision of their clinic preceptor, residents will develop an ambulatory patient panel of their own within the clinic. These patients will see the residents as their primary care provider, and the residents will direct and manage their care for the duration of the clinic. These longitudinal relationships with patients can be the most rewarding aspect of medicine.

Locations of ambulatory clinics where residents are assigned are: Detroit Main Campus, Fairlane (Dearborn), Sterling Heights, and Pierson (Grosse Pointe). Clinics are held one afternoon weekly during inpatient rotations, and one full day weekly during Ambulatory/Elective rotations. No ambulatory clinics are held during months of MICU or Night Float. print
