Internal Medicine: Fellowship Programs

Bone and Mineral Metabolism The Bone and Mineral Metabolism fellowship is designed to provide training in clinical investigation in the field of bone and mineral metabolism. Bone and mineral metabolism is generally practiced as a subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism, although an increasing number of bone and mineral metabolism programs are specifically designating sections on calcium metabolism.

Cardiology Fellowship The cardiovascular division believes that patient care, teaching and research are all essential missions, and the cardiology fellowship program underscores these missions with a three-year fellowship designed to provide excellent training in all aspects of modern cardiology.  Fourth year positions in cardiovascular research, and fourth and fifth year positions in interventional cardiology, electro-physiology, research and transplantation are also available.

Endocrinology and Metabolism The Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship Program prepares trainees for certification in the subspecialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The fellowship program provides an extensive clinical experience in endocrinology and metabolism, the opportunity for significant clinical research, and the setting in which to acquire the skills of scholarship in the subspecialty.

Gastroenterology The objective of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is to provide fellows with the skills required for them to reach individual educational goals in a setting that is both supportive and challenging. Formal training is provided in the diagnosis and management of luminal gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Fellows will be instilled with cognitive and technical skills as well as an academic perspective that emphasizes renewal of knowledge in order to maintain the highest standards of practice.

Hematology and Medical Oncology Our fellowship program provides the training and experience necessary for fellows to complete all the requirements for board eligibility in hematology and medical oncology and be competent to provide expertise as consultants. There are no restrictions regarding the types of cases our fellows see and they are involved in patient care right from the start, with added responsibility as their competency increases. This model of education ensures that our fellows leave the program exceptionally prepared for any career path they may chose.

Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology The overall goal of the Henry Ford Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology Fellowship is to provide fellows with an intellectual environment conducive to acquiring the knowledge, skills, clinical judgement, and attitudes to pursue a career as either an academic infectious diseases clinical educator or clinical investigator. Both the faculty and the sponsoring institution are fully committed to providing the educational programs, resources, and facilities necessary to meet this goal.

Nephrology All clinical supervision for in- and outpatient rotations and clinical encounters during the Nephrology fellowship is provided by full-time members of the Division of Nephrology. The education provided by our highly skilled faculty of clinician-educators is supplemented by regular involvement during conferences by our basic science faculty and is supported by Henry Ford Health System. The faculty members are geographically located at Henry Ford Hospital but may have outpatient clinics at satellite facilities.

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine The Fellowship program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is a three-year program designed to satisfy the requirement for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the subspecialties of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. We are one of the largest programs in the United States with a total of sixteen fellows. A two-year fellowship in Pulmonary Disease only is not offered as part of this program. The program is open to graduates of approved American or Canadian internal medicine residencies, who satisfy eligibility criteria for board certification in the specialty of internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The fellowship works closely in conjunction with the accredited program in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital. In a recent report in the US News & World Report, our institution was ranked in the top 20 programs in the United States in Pulmonary Medicine. Recognized nationally as one of the top programs in the country, we are also one of the largest with 17 fellows.

  1. Pulmonary and Critical Care: Three years
  2. Critical Care Medicine after successful completion of an Internal Medicine Subspecialty fellowship: One year
  3. Integrated Critical Care Medicine with a Henry Ford IM Subspecialty Fellowship (eg. Nephrology, Infectious Disease, etc. ): Additional One year
  4. Integrated Internal Medicine / Emergency Medicine / Critical Care Medicine: Six years
This program is available to trainees in our combined residency in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Candidates submit applications for matriculation into the EM/IM/CCM program during year 2 of training.
  5. Interventional Pulmonary: Currently available to fellows enrolled in the Pulmonary / Critical Care Medicine fellowship with future plans for a dedicated 12-month program.

Sleep Medicine The Section of Sleep Medicine offers a one year fellowship approved by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that is supported by Henry Ford Health System, one of the largest and most respected integrated health care delivery systems in the country.

Fellows benefit from being exposed to a wide spectrum and large quantity of patients, as our hospitals and medical centers serve the metropolitan population of Detroit as well as the surrounding suburbs. This provides an exceptional environment for learning because of the multiple populations we serve and the breadth of experience they provide.
